Havana Typeface

My grandma was born in Havana and moved to the US as a teenager. I always loved hearing stories from her childhood and it's something I often remember her by. Though I have not been able to visit Cuba yet, the idea of going there still excites me. Havana is a typeface inspired by the fun, retro 1950's weathered Cuban architecture and design. I used shapes and colors from pictures of signage and cigar boxes as a foundation and adapted the type from there. The letters are also moving forward which alludes to Cuba's energy. Some letters have an alternate style that world more appropriately depending on the context of the word that is spelled. It is my hope that this typeface communicates as much excitement as I had making it.
